eBay to add crypto payment options soon, CEO says

Major ecommerce marketplace eBay could soon integrate crypto payments, CEO Jamie Iannone said in a recent interview.

The internet marketplace is one of the oldest ecommerce platforms and now aims to become the go-to platform for Gen Z and millennials. The CEO said in a interview with The Street that the company has been looking to integrate crypto payment options for some time and an official announcement could be made during the upcoming investor day on March 10.

During his interview, Iannone revealed that the e-commerce giant is looking for new payment methods as they already manage $85 billion in volume directly on its platform.

Speaking of eBay’s stance on emerging technology like blockchain and cryptocurrencies, Iannone pointed to the growing popularity of non-replaceable tokens traded on its platform without making an official announcement about it.

Iannone said the company changed its policy last year to make the e-commerce platform a place to buy and sell anything, be it a physical or digital commodity. eBay did not respond to Coin-Crypto’s request for comment at the time of publication.

The increasing popularity and demand for cryptocurrencies has led several online platforms to add crypto payment options. eBay, with its focus on capturing Millennial and Gen Z customers, aims to do the same. However, it won’t be the company’s first attempt at making crypto payments – eBay tried it first integrate BTC payments in 2014.

As Coin-Crypto reported in May 2021, eBay also explored the integration of Bitcoin payments along with NFT trading last year. The crypto payments integration plan now appears to be nearing completion as crypto has become mainstream and more acceptable to the masses.
